2021        Jan 9, In Indonesia a passenger plane carrying 56 passengers and six crew members lost contact shortly after taking off from Jakarta. The 26-year-old Boeing 737-500 Sriwijaya Air flight went missing over the Java Sea while en route to Pontianak. In 2022 Indonesia's air accident investigator KNKT said in a final report that a faulty automatic engine throttle system that was not properly monitored by pilots led to the deadly crash.

2021        Jan 30, In Norway two civilian employees of the Norwegian military were killed and a third one injured in an avalanche on the remote Arctic Jan Mayen island. The only inhabitants on Jan Mayen, part of Norway since 1930, are the staff of the Norwegian military and the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

2021        Feb 2, In Alaska an avalanche slide near Anchorage claimed the lives of three men hiking near Bear Mountain. The bodies of Thomas Devine (54) of Chugiak; Matthew Nyman (43) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Edward Watson (50) of Miami, were found the next day.

2021        Feb 5, In Pakistan three climbers were declared missing while attempting to climb K2, the world's second highest mountain. On Feb. 18 officials said Ali Sadpara, Jon Snorri and Juan Pablo Morh should now be considered dead.

2021        Feb 6, In Utah four skiers were killed and four others were rescued near Salt Lake City in the deadliest snowslide in the United States in seven year.

2021        Feb 7, In India as many as 150 people were feared dead after a Himalayan glacier in the northern state of Uttarakhand broke apart before crashing into a dam. At least 19 people were killed, and at least 180 more remained missing. About 2,500 people in 13 villages were trapped by the floods. More than 200 people were killed when rock and ice broke loose due to glacial melt brought about by global warming.

2021        Feb 20, Electricity was restored to most Texans who had lost power after a winter storm, but water systems for nearly two-thirds of residents were disrupted, leaving millions without drinkable water. At least 70 people have died in a storm-battered region that stretches to Ohio, and the final tally could be much higher.

2021        Feb 22, The Indian coastguard reached a drifting boat carrying 90 Rohingya refugees in the Andaman Sea and gave some food and water. Passengers said at least eight people had died onboard over the weekend.

2021        Feb 28, At least 15 Africans drowned when their boat capsized off Libya. A rubber boat carrying at least 110 migrants had embarked from the Libyan coastal town of Zawiya on Feb. 26.

2021        Mar 2, In southern California at least 13 people died in a collision between a tractor-trailer and an SUV on State Route 115. The victims included migrants from Guatemala and Mexico. One of the vehicles was carrying 25 people when it was hit by the semitruck near Holtville, California. Another SUV was carrying 19 people. It caught fire. All the passengers got out and were taken into custody.

2021        Mar 7, A series of explosions in Equatorial Guinea killed at least 31 people at the Nkoantoma military base in Bata. President Obiang Nguema said the blasts had been caused badly stored dynamite along with stubble burning by nearby farmers. The death toll from the explosions soon rose to 105.

2021        Mar 7, In Yemen a fire broke out in a detention center for migrants south of Sanaa, killing at least 45 people, mostly Ethiopian migrants, and injuring more than 170 others. On March 20 Houthi rebels broke their silence on the cause of the fire saying guards fired three tear gas canisters into a crowded hangar in Sanaa, trying to end a protest by the migrants.

2021        May 22, In CongoDRC Mount Nyiragongo erupted. Tens of thousands of people fled the eastern city of Goma late today when lava began to spew from the flanks of the volcano. At least 32 people were killed amid chaos in Goma. Residents of Buhene returned early the next day to find that their homes had been swallowed by a river of lava, about half a mile wide. Nearly 500,000 people were left without clean drinking water after the volcano erupted.

Most passengers were women and children traveling from Niger state to neighboring Kebbi state. The outlying islands of Nomuka, Mango and Fonoifua were hit with 49-foot-high waves and few homes remained standing. This was the most powerful volcanic blast on Earth in more than 30 years.
