A remote island nation in the Pacific Ocean. Its

1971
Australia joined with New Zealand and 14 independent of
self-governing island nations to form the South Pacific Forum. The
name was changed in 2000 to Pacific Islands Forum. Member states
include: Australia, the Cook Islands, the Federated States of
Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru, New
Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands,
Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. Since 2006, associate members
territories are New Caledonia and French Polynesia. In 2011 Guam,
the Northern Marianas and American Samoa became associate members.

1978 Oct 1, The Pacific island
of Tuvalu gained independence from Britain. It had been the Ellice
bit of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands.

devastated most of the buildings. The fate of 55 islanders was

to have become the 189th member of the United Nations. The country
consisted of 10 square miles on 9 atolls with a population of 9,000.

2001 Oct, Tuvalu secured an
agreement with New Zealand to accept an annual quote of refugees due
to rising sea levels from global warming.

2003 Nov 9, I was reported that
Tuvalu officials were searching nearby islands for relocation due to
rising sea water. They planned to use some $45 million acquired by
selling the .tv internet suffix.

2011 Tuvalu experienced severe
drought as La Nina settled over the region depriving the area of
substantial rainfall for 6 months. Tuvalu and Tokelau declared a
state of emergency.
